A Word from Jen--
I’m Jennifer, and I encourage and equip parents to be confident spiritual leaders in their homes. If you have kids at home, you get to be their shepherd and lead them to truth. What could be more important or exciting? Or maybe terrifying and overwhelming? Either way, you’re in the right place.
(VIDEO NOTE: The sign-up for the Discipleship Starter Kit is now on the home page, right up top. You can’t miss it!)
What’s in it for you
This blog is for the clueless newbie and the exhausted veteran out of ideas. Nobody gets it right all the time, so we need each other. You’re going to find a lot of grace on this blog. As long as you press on, I’ll be the president of your fan club!
I know what it’s like to recognize your calling as a parent to disciple the kids God put in your home, but have no idea what that’s supposed to look like. I also know what it’s like to feel completely unqualified to do such an important job. If there had been a blog like this for me when my kids were littles, it would have been such a relief!
You’re going to find posts about:
- Studying the Bible, for real, with your kids
- Talking about God in planned and unplanned ways
- Reviews of some of the great (and not so great) books and products out there
- Planning ahead (for next week, five years from now, and beyond)
- Hard-earned wisdom from parenting my own two kids
- Answers to questions you haven’t even thought of yet!
Why I do what I do
For me, it starts with biblical literacy. If you don’t know God’s Word, how on earth can you live it out? Or teach it? Or encourage a friend with it? Sure, most church kids know the Greatest Hits, and have brought home countless coloring pages. There’s nothing wrong with a coloring page or a word search to reinforce a story with small children, but listen–at some point, it’s time to serve up some meat in their spiritual diets, right?
There are kids starving for this. Sure, it’s a lot of work, but consider the alternative.
In 2005, as a new mom, I discovered Precept Bible studies and the inductive Bible study method, and that was it. Full-on Precept junkie, loud and proud. When my daughter (now a teenager) was seven, I started teaching her with Precept’s series for kids. It was a sweet time together, and we both grew closer together and closer to the Lord by studying His Word. Later, I did the same thing with my son. In 2011, I started teaching Precept (and my own studies) in a class to kids and their parents, and I haven’t stopped.
In all this teaching, I’ve fallen on my face plenty of times. But I’ve seen the view from the mountaintop, too. Both failure and success are part of the deal. God specializes in redeeming things, so as long as we’re seeking to honor him with our homes, our time, and our families, I can promise you this- God will bless it. Whatever you think about your ability to do this or where you are in your own faith, I promise you can answer this call…and do it well.
I see a generation of parents with no idea that their job is to be their kids’ spiritual teachers, let alone how. And you’ve seen the numbers about our Christian kids leaving the faith in droves once they leave home. Why is that? Lots of reasons, but here’s one: They don’t have deep roots nurtured by years of teaching and encouragement. They haven’t seen what faith is outside of Sunday morning church, and they haven’t seen why it matters. Bottom line–They don’t own their faith, so it’s easy to give it up.
We see that young Christians know little about their Bibles and even less about doctrine.
It’s urgent, folks. But it’s not even close to too late!
I’m not REALLY Wonder Woman (But how cool would that be?)
I’m not just the crazy kids’ Bible study lady. Here’s a fly-over of my life:
- I struggle against the same stuff you probably do—discipline, schedule, decisions, self-doubt, frustrating hair, on and on.
- I do love Precept, and colored pencils give me a deep, abiding feeling that everything is okay.
- I also have a little Wonder Woman problem, as you may have gathered by now.
- I love Converse low tops, kitsch, and crafting (am I the only one whose craft area looks like a Michael’s outpost, but hasn’t had time to play in years?!?)
- I have a Masters degree that doesn’t impress my kids—or dogs—in the least.
- Maybe it’s because I’m Texas born and bred, but I call all kids “sweetie”.
- The Bible I carry around is NASB, but I also love Amplified.
- My favorite verse is 3 John 1:4- “I have no greater joy than this, to hear of my children walking in the truth.”
And I can’t believe Jesus keeps loving me like He does, or that I’ll never get to the far reaches of it. I’m pretty crazy about Him, too.
If you’ve never even heard of Inductive Bible Study, you’ve come to the right place.
If you’re a Precept lifer interested in passing that along to one child, you’ve come to the right place.
If you’re in children’s ministry on a quest for something different, you’ve come to the right place.
And hey, if you feel completely inadequate to help any kid learn how to understand his Bible, you really are in the right place!
So, now it’s time to do two things–
